OCTOBER
IS PRO-LIFE MONTH |
|
| |
One of the
most fascinating courses I took while in college was embryology
in which we studied in detail the development of an embryo from
fertilization to the fetus stage. The combination of the
mother's and father's genetic material starts a human life – not
"potentially" human, but human from the start. If it were
"potentially" human it could become some other organism along
the way, but that never happens.
As cells divide, the DNA instructs some to become "neural"
tissue which begins the formation of the spine and nervous
system. Some cells become "epithelium" that forms the lining of
glands and organs and, eventually, the whole outer surface of
the body. Early in the process certain cells form "muscle"
tissue and some become the "connective" tissue that holds
everything together and in place.
From the earliest stages of development, an embryo exhibits the
four biological signs of life: there is growth, there is
response to stimuli, there is metabolism as nutrients are taken
in and waste matter is discarded by each cell, and there is the
potential to reproduce. These are not religious beliefs, they
are simply biological realities.
Human life is, of course, more than a biological reality. We
believe that each human being is made in God's image and that we
are given a soul directly by God. In Baptism we are made sharers
in the promise of heaven and are called to live lives worthy of
that calling.
During this Pro-Life month of October, pray each day that those
who discount the value of human life, whether before birth or in
old age, will be touched by the Holy Spirit and come to
recognize and respect the incredible worth of every human being.
