AFRICAN DROUGHT RELIEF
Bishop Emeritus Boland encourages
faithful and generous parishioners to support the drought and
famine stricken people of East Africa. The current drought,
complicated by political instability in Somalia, has led to
desperate conditions for millions of people.
Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is already on the ground,
providing as much aid as they can with current resources.
In a letter to U.S. Bishops, United States Conference of
Catholic Bishops President Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Catholic
Relief Services Chairman Bishop Gerald Kicanas wrote:
|
Every day we are seeing more and more
heartbreaking news about the drought and famine. . . We
see millions of people being forced from their homes, leaving
behind what meager possessions they had, and walking for days
over rough terrain.
There are parents whose little children have died, and children
who have been orphaned. They are suffering from hunger, thirst,
disease, and drought. It is a humanitarian crisis that cries out
for help to Christians throughout the world. |
The Diocese of Savannah will
contribute $10,000 to this great need. We are recommending that
parishes make a donation from their resources and that
individuals are also encouraged to make a direct contribution:
