THE DESERT TABLEAU
The Catholic Church is rich in the theme of the desert, for example, the Israelites wandered for 40 years in the desert and Jesus fasted for 40 days in the desert. It was in the desert that the Israelites found their identity as a people of God and Jesus found himself tested. The desert not only represents a physical location as mentioned but also spirituality. The desert is where one goes to communicate on a deeper level with God and in the process learn who we are as people of God and members of a parish community united in the Holy Spirit. The cacti plants, which adorn the front of the altar steps, were chosen with the desert theme in mind. The arrangement is there to help us reflect on our Lenten Journey. Choose a plant and find its spiritual meaning for yourself. This is the beginning of a soul-nourishing Lent—a journey we travel together. You are promised to be rewarded in more ways than one come Easter.
"The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad, the desert shall rejoice and blossom." (Isaiah 35)
